Tips and Tricks - 2/13/10

February13

Cropping Your Photos

1. One of the easiest ways to crop your photos and to be able to instantly try on different aspect ratios and crops is by creating a clipping mask. Start by opening up a photo and dragging it onto your page.

2. Create a rectangle on the layer underneath your photo and “clip” the photo to it. This can be done by selecting Layer>Clipping Mask from the pull down menu or by pressing the shortcut key, Alt-Ctrl-G, while in your photo layer. Don’t worry if you get something odd, we will fix that in the next step.

3. Next, select the rectangle layer and the Move tool from the toolbar. Boxes will occur at the four corners of the rectangle. Click and drag on these handles until you find a crop for your photo that you like. In this example, I cropped the left side of my photo to get rid of some distracting white areas in the photograph and to move the subject’s eyes closer to the third points of the photograph.

4. This same technique may be used with any of the custom shapes, such as this postage stamp shape, found in Photoshop or with any other layer in your file. Try clipping your photo to text, to layers with a funky shaped edge, or to a premade photo mask in a creative shape.

Guest Mixologist Spotlight: Joyce Paul Designs

February10

Joyce Paul is our super fabulous Guest Mixologist this month.  Take some time to read and learn more about this fantastic designer.

How did you get into designing?
I started scrapping about 3 years ago and got hooked instantly. Approx. one year after I started scrapping a digi store held a designer contest, so I decided to participate.  Of course I wasn’t very good, so I didn’t even make it through the first round, butI loved designing, so I decided not to give up.  I started to improve my designs and started giving away my designs as freebies on my blog.  Not long after another digi store approached me and asked me if I wanted to come and sell at their store. (the rest is history - LOL)

What program do you use to scrap/design?
I use Photoshop CS4 and Illustrator to draw.
I also use Artrage to “paint”.

What is your favorite NSBR thing to do?
Gardening and shopping!! :-)

What are the top 5 songs on your list right now?
#1 Owl City - Fireflies

#2 Jason Mores - Butterfly

#3 Michael Bublé - Haven’t met you yet

#4 Jamie Cullum - Don’t Stop The Music

#5 Pearl Jam - Just Breathe

What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Setting up my own digi scrapping website :-)

Are you musically inclined?
I love music and I always sing when I’m in the shower or when I’m driving.  When I was younger, my cousins and I “formed” a girlband called: “Jolish” - the first 2 letters of our names. (Joyce - Lindsay - Sharon) LOL  Of course, we didn’t get any further than our garage ;-) (we aways used to sing and dance in their garage)

What is a typical day like for you?
get up - go to work - work (fulltime 40 hours a week) - get back from work - cook - eat - check my forum / customer service - take a shower - bed (boring — LOL)

What inspires you?
It can be anything, really. Items from inside my house, outside, tv programs or the internet.

What are your top 5 designs and/or layouts you’ve ever done?
I haven’t created a lot of layouts lately, so I’ll go for designs:

#1 Lovely Day (a new kit that I will release this week ;-) )

#2 Dreamy

#3 Serendipity Collab with Fei-Fei’s Stuff

#4 My Love Collab with Jazzmin Designs

#5 Spring Fling

How do you start a layout?
I always started out with the picture I want to scrap. Then I pick a background and go from there.

What made you want to jump from extraordinary scrapper to extraordinary designer?
I have always been very creative, ever since I was a little girl and I like to explore new things.

So once I decided to try my hand at designing I got hooked instantly!

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I always wanted to be a teacher, but I never became one :-)

How long does it take you to design a kit?
It usually takes 2 days. But when I’m really inspired it takes about 8 hours.
(but I get distracted easily…LOL…so I’m not really only designing those 8 hours)

Who are your scrapping/designing heros?
There are so many designers who’s work I adore!

To name a few: fei-fei’s stuff, vera lim, bren boone and many many more!

As far as scrapping hero’s … I love all of the girls that are on “my” CT :-)

Do you have a specific style?
Mostly Clean and Simple, but I always try to throw some things in there (in my kits) that allows people to cluster as well!

Do you have a vision of what a kit will look like when you start it?
No, not at all! LOL
I just pick my colours, search a theme that goes well with the colors that I’ve picked and I go from there! :-)

What would be your dream vacation?
I love Australia! I have been there before and if I had the money, I would go there every year!

Love it over there!

And no After 5 interview would be complete without this question…What is your favorite after hours drink? My favorite cocktail would be Archers and Lemonade, but my absolute favorite after hours drink is: Baileys!! YUM!!

Here are some of the gorgeous goodies Joyce has in our store this month.

Tips and Tricks - working with Texturen -

February5

Hallo liebe A5D Blogleser
